Writer’s Desk

Normally, I don’t post a Writer’s Desk during Short Fiction Month.  After all, it’s pretty obvious what I’m doing.  However, as I’ve been absent lately, I felt this was the best way to re-engage with my readers.

While Short Fiction Month got off to a great start (I’d like to think) with A Life of Days, my writing lapsed over the past few weeks as I came down with something, ending up sick in bed for the second time in less than a month.  It’s unfair: when I end up home from work one would think it’s the perfect opportunity to get in some writing, yet strangely writing is the last thing on one’s mind whilst battling a fever.  This illness was far less severe than the bout I had with the flu last month, but no less miserable in its own right.

Well, with the last traces of illness fading, my voice returning (again) and all of my favorite college basketball teams eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, I find myself at last free from distractions.  It’s time to get back to work, and as I see it, I owe my readers two short stories (not including my regularly-scheduled post this Saturday).

Inspiration is a tricky thing.  There are days when I can crank out a complete short fiction piece before leaving for work, and others where I struggle to lay down more than two sentences.  But I need to do this.  Writing has become an integral part of my life; when I’m not doing it, I feel idle, like my time is being wasted.  I take fulfillment from my career as an engineer, but I’ve gotten to the point where if I’m not both going to work and writing I still feel lazy, as though I’m not working to my full potential.

So this is going to be a rough week, but hopefully a rewarding one as well.
