Hello, dreamers.
I have a busy week ahead of me. I’ll be taking my first, tenuous steps into the publishing foray, while continuing to explore the possibility of resuming work on Pathfinder and reading along with a few CPs on The Pioneer. If I have any time left, I might even try to work on short fiction, but we shall see.
Here’s what I’ll be doing this week:
Pathfinder
My return to Pathfinder continues. This week, I plan to continue my experimental writing, seeing if I am, in fact, prepared to resume work on my former work-in-progress.
As I keep saying, as it stands currently, Pathfinder is a mess. When I first began writing The Pioneer this past year, sorting through the jumble of full and partial rewrites I had proved so tedious that, ultimately, I elected to trash everything I had and start from scratch. That did the trick, and with that in mind, this evening I began the same process with Pathfinder. I only managed three paragraphs, but it’s a start, and I dare say a good one. Once I’ve finished this first chapter, I can go back to my existing material, and see if there’s anything I may want to splice into the new material.
Right now, my biggest challenge is determining the overall course of the story. By necessity, the flow of Pathfinder is very different from that of The Pioneer; the crew spends the better part of ten years in cold storage. As the story begins prior to their departure from Earth, that means at least half of part 1 passes without the crew, and must revolve around other characters. Right now, I’ll admit I’m starting to question that approach, considering simply omitting several subplots and scenes involving minor characters to focus entirely on the crew. I have a lot to think about this week.
For now, much of my plans in terms of writing this week are, for various reasons, either nebulous or not something I’d prefer to discuss here. Among other things, as I’ve said amidst advice I’ve gotten I plan to discuss my foray into querying as little as possible, which includes not announcing the date on which I actually begin sending out letters. However, rest assured I have an important week ahead of me. So for now, keep reading, and dare to dream. – MK
