Hello, dreamers.
I apologize for being haphazard with my regular posts over the past few weeks. Things have been hectic at times, and I often find myself giving in to the urge to just write, neglecting my posts in doing so. However, I’m easing my way back into a groove, so expect things to return to normal shortly.
Of course, getting back into my groove means getting back to my current work-in-progress. So, without further ado, here’s the latest:
Dawn of the Pioneers
It’s been a productive week (er…half-week) on my current work-in-progress. I’ve answered several vital questions (for now), and have a clearer path forward (I hope). Much of the slowdown over the past few weeks has been due to the gravity of what’s going on in the story at present. I need everything to come together properly. That began with the introduction of a new major character, but now it’s led into a structural issue.
For some time now, I’ve had a difficult time deciding where and how Phase 1 should end. The more I thought about it, I realized that was the hangup that’s been bogging down my work. For now, I believe I’ve fixed it. As it turns out, I had not, in fact, finished Phase 1 several weeks ago. In fact, I finished it tonight, and plan to begin Phase 2 tomorrow. The chapter I completed tonight, along with the previous one, were tossed back to the other side of the line, and as such Phase 1 now consists of nine chapters. That, I feel, is sufficient.
Now, at last, it’s on to Phase 2. After a few near-fits over seeming gaps in my notes, I’ve finally gotten to where I need to be with this phase of the story. Phase 2 will see Randall Holmes travel to Acadia: a very different colony world from his beloved Denali. However, first the phase will begin with a seeming non sequitur: a brief chapter depicting the a scientific discovery that will change the course of human history, for better or worse.
I’m also planning on increasing my pace once things get up and running on Phase 2, in hopes of making up some time in the next week. All of this is leading up to NaNoWriMo, when I’ll be doing the principal writing of the story. There’s still lots to do, and lots to come. So keep reading, and as always, dare to dream. – MK
