“Hey!”

The call echoed through the cavernous hold.  Lowering his tab, Will turned to find Devin waving from the distant platform.

“My stylus broke.  Can you pass yours?” He shouted across the gap.

“Sure,” Will replied.  “Might take a minute.”

“Well I’m in no hurry.  Are you?”

Of course Will wasn’t either.  The ship might be flying as fast as she could, but he had nowhere to go.  Eyeballing the trajectory, Will gave himself a few timing swings before flinging his stylus out into the hold.

It flew quickly for a moment before hitting the gravity differential in the main hold.  In an instant its trajectory froze, the narrow object tumbling slowly on its long journey across the hundred-meter chasm, passing over tanks of cyanobacteria cooled by nearly endless banks of fans and helium pipes.

Its flight was slow, but if Will had learned one thing being aboard this ship for so many years, it was patience.  The stylus would find the end of its journey, and so would they.

  1. Hehe. It’s important to not get in too much of a hurry while operating in zero gee. Coming to a stop at the destination after a speedy flight can be a real pain in the neck…literally. Fun story!

  2. Hi Michael! It’s been a while since I got to read a piece of yours! The image of a stylus spinning through a vast weightless space is fantastic. 🙂 How are you doing? Keeping busy with writing?
